A DETAILED THEOLOGICAL BIBLE STUDY
Revelation Chapter 13
I. CONTEXT OF REVELATION 13
1. Literary Context
Revelation 13 follows directly after Revelation 12, which introduces:
The dragon (Satan)
The cosmic conflict between God and evil
Satan’s expulsion from heaven and intensified persecution of God’s people on earth
Revelation 13 explains how Satan wages war on the saints through earthly agents.
2. Place in Revelation’s Structure
Revelation 13 belongs to the “conflict section” (Rev 12–14), where:
Satan imitates God’s work
Evil forms a counterfeit trinity
Dragon (false father)
Beast from the sea (false Christ)
Beast from the earth (false prophet)
II. OVERVIEW OF REVELATION 13
Revelation 13 introduces two beasts:
The Beast from the Sea (political/military power)
The Beast from the Earth (religious/ideological power)
Together, they enforce:
Worship of the beast
Economic and social control
Persecution of believers
III. VERSE-BY-VERSE EXPOSITION
A. THE BEAST FROM THE SEA (Revelation 13:1–10)
Revelation 13:1
“And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea…”
Key Symbols
Sea: Chaos, nations, Gentile world (Dan 7:2–3; Isa 17:12)
Beast: Kingdom or political power (Dan 7)
Ten Horns & Seven Heads
Ten horns: Complete political power
Seven heads: Fullness of authority or succession of kingdoms
Blasphemous names: Claiming divine authority
👉 Theologically: This beast represents anti-God political power energized by Satan.
Revelation 13:2
“…like unto a leopard…bear…lion…”
This imagery comes directly from Daniel 7, combining:
Babylon (lion)
Medo-Persia (bear)
Greece (leopard)
👉 This beast is a composite empire, representing the culmination of human rebellion against God.
Revelation 13:3
“One of his heads as it were wounded to death…”
Interpretations
Political resurrection (revival of empire)

Blasphemy Includes:
Claiming divine authority
Persecuting God’s people
Rewriting truth
Revelation 13:7
“It was given unto him to make war with the saints…”
⚠️ Important:
The beast’s power is permitted, not autonomous
God remains sovereign
Revelation 13:8
“All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him…”
“Earth-dwellers”
A technical term in Revelation for:
Those opposed to God
Those aligned with worldly systems
Revelation 13:9–10

👉 The mark represents total loyalty, not merely a physical mark.
Revelation 13:18
